The Starbucks® concept began, ironically, in the espresso bars of Italy back in the 1980’s when an American tourist
thought that the U.S. should join in the idea of having a coffee bar on every corner just like Italy. The first Starbucks®
opened in Seattle, Washington in 1971 and in 1982 Howard Shultz, while on a business trip to Italy, was so impressed
with the popularity and culture of the many coffee shops and saw their potential in Seattle. He merged his idea with
the Seattle Starbucks® coffee shop and the coffee sensation was created. Now, in the next millennium, the craze
continues as Starbucks® brand coffee is brought back to the country where the concept was originally born.
